Crystal details Symphony’s $25m makeover
Crystal Symphony’s $25m makeover added Swarovski crystal chandeliers, cashmere throws, sunken Philippe Starck Duravit Jacuzzi bathtubs, new pool deck furniture, works by Venetian artists, service islands with new pizza ovens and woks, and dozens more upscale and behind-the-scenes embellishments. The changes were implemented during the 1995-built ship’s October drydock at Atlantic Marine Boston. Crystal Cruises said the vessel now offers completely transformed Crystal Penthouses, Lido Café and pool areas, redesigned Penthouses and Prego Italian restaurant, among numerous other improvements. The 982sq ft Crystal Penthouses were remodeled top to bottom, with expanded living space, new audiovisual systems and floor-to-ceiling dining room windows. Ocean-view bathrooms offer large Philippe Starck bathtubs, glass mosaic tiles and recessed televisions.Penthouses were redesigned in two new color schemes, with new custom cabinetry, plush bedding, flat-screen televisions and lavish bathroom accoutrements.The Lido Café gained a refined motif with abundant natural light and colors and details inspired by the Hampton seashore. New food and drink service islands improve flow.The Seahorse and Neptune Pool Decks now sport white deck furniture with citrus-hued cushions and throw pillows for added al fresco dining and conversational seating. With its retractable roof and new teak decking, the mid-ship Neptune Pool was replaced with additional plush seating and a large Jacuzzi hot tub.Prego, the Italian restaurant showcasing cuisine by Piero Selvaggio, gained chocolate suede walls and red wine-colored upholstery, as well as new lighting.All staterooms were refreshed with leather sofas replacing armchairs.

Saga Shipping has selected Swansea Dry Dock to undertake a major refit of its newly purchased ship, the former Astoria, into Saga Pearl II.

Windstar unveils product enhancement plans

Windstar Cruises outlined a new phase of its ‘Degrees of Difference’ initiative to add amenities and enhancements that will be completed in stages, finishing in the summer. Windstar president Diane Moore said the program will raise the bar in dining, accommodations and service.

Rotterdam set for Signature of Excellence upgrade

When Holland America Line’s Rotterdam embarks on seven-day round-trips from Seattle to Alaska next spring, the ship will be refreshed with Signature of Excellence upgrades, including a new category of lanai staterooms.

Major refurb planned for Black Watch

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ ship Black Watch will enter dry-dock in early December 2009 for an extensive programme of refurbishment. The work, to be carried out at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, is scheduled to start on December 2 as Black Watch returns from a Canary Islands cruise. She will resume service on December 14, with a five day European Christmas Markets mini cruise, departing from Southampton.


Hanseatic emerges from Bredo makeover

Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic left the Bredo shipyard in Bremerhaven earlier this week having undergone a two week makeover. Besides technical work, the primary focus was on refurbishing the suites of the luxury expedition ship.

Sea Princess BAE San Francisco drydock is online

Princess Cruises said the enthusiastic reception for its recent online drydock journals for Golden Princess and Dawn Princess has prompted another installment, for Sea Princess’ current drydock. Visitors to can follow along through Sept. 25 as the ship receives new interior furnishings and finishes, fresh hull paint and exterior refurbishment, plus the addition of an adults-only Sanctuary.
