Construction has begun on the second modern riverboat in the series of five planned for American Cruise Lines.

This second riverboat is the sister of American Song, the first modern-style riverboat in the US. Its inaugural cruise on the Mississippi River is set for October.

Like American Song, the second modern riverboat is under construction at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland. Service is scheduled to start in summer 2019, and itineraries will be announced soon.

American Cruise Lines' commitment to newbuilds sets it apart in the US river market.

'They are unlike anything other cruise companies are doing and the interest has been phenomenal,' VP Timothy Beebe said.

In 2018, with 10 vessels, American Cruise Lines operates the largest modern fleet of authentic paddle-wheelers, small coastal cruise ships and, counting American Song, the only modern riverboat in the country. More than 35 itineraries stretch to destinations in 25 states.

Besides plying the rivers, the fleet sails the coastal and inland waterways of New England, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and the Southeast.
