On Wednesday the Court struck down the Domestic Partnership Act, which allowed 'domestic partnerships' but not same-sex marriage.
Carnival Corp. actively backed OUTBermuda, a registered charity that supports the LGBTQ community, in its challenge of the constitutionality of the Domestic Partnership Act along with another plaintiff, Maryellen Jackson.
Proud to champion equality under the law
'As a company committed to equality, inclusion and diversity, we believe everyone deserves equal dignity and respect, and we are proud to have provided our support to OUTBermuda’s efforts to champion equality under the law,' Carnival Corp. said in a statement.
Princess, Cunard, P&O offer same-sex wedding packages
Princess Cruises, Cunard and P&O Cruises are among the Carnival brands with ships registered in Bermuda, where a May 2017 Supreme Court ruling condoned and recognized same-sex marriage, enabling the ships flagged there to legally perform these ceremonies at sea.
Beginning in summer 2017, the brands began booking on-board wedding packages for same-sex couples, with the same legal recognition as opposite-sex couples.
But in February, following a Bermuda referendum, the government signed the Domestic Partnership Act in an attempt, it said, to address the fact that a majority of Bermudians oppose same-sex marriage while also complying with the European Courts by ensuring that recognition and protection for same-sex couples are put in place.
Six Carnival brands to call Bermuda
Six of Carnival Corp.'s nine brands are scheduled to visit Bermuda in 2018, making a total of 59 stops, or fewer than 15% of the cruise visits. The ships of other lines are booked for a combined 282 calls this year.
