Carnival Corp. & plc is calling its new MedallionNet a 'game-changing connectivity service.'

Enabled by SES Networks, which last year acquired O3b Networks—the provider of Royal Caribbean's blazing-fast VOOM Wi-Fi—MedallionNet is touted as offering easy-to-access Wi-Fi with exceptional speeds and bandwidth, pervasive stateroom signal strength and service consistency.

Carnival said the connectivity service will leverage SES's collective geostationary earth orbit and medium-earth orbit satellite constellations, managed services, antenna and shipboard technology to provide high-performance and reliable broadband at sea.

The service is enabled by hardware and software shipboard technology advances associated with Carnival's proprietary O·C·E·A·N Experience Platform.

'MedallionNet will set the new standard for Wi-Fi service at sea and we look forward to rolling it out to our guests,' said Carnival Corp.'s John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer.

MedallionNet emerged from Carnival Corp.'s Global Experience and Innovation Center in Miami.

'SES Networks is privileged to be associated with Carnival Corporation's Global Experience and Innovation team and to be powering MedallionNet,' said Steve Collar, CEO of SES Networks (and previously CEO of O3b Networks).

According to Collar, SES is the only company to ofer a geostationary earth orbit and medium-earth orbit satellite constellation, with the scale, performance and technological diversity to enable the highest performing Wi-Fi connectivity at sea plus immersive media and gaming content.

Earlier this week Carnival Corp. announced its new OceanView digital streaming service with original content and PlayOcean Casino for gaming on mobile devices at sea. Both were promoted at an event today in New York's Times Square.

MedallionNet leverages multi-band antennas configured in an innovative shipboard formation to minimize potential impact to passenger connectivity due to seasonal weather or ship positioning, and fuses multi-orbit satellite bandwidth to deliver an immersive connectivity experience.

Carnival said the system also offers an unprecedented volume of shipboard access points to provide a new level of reliability and signal pervasiveness at sea.

More specifics about MedallionNet and specific cruise brand implementation will be announced later this year.
