Carnival Cruise Line modified three itineraries as Tropical Storm Maria strengthened into a hurricane on Sunday, menacing the storm-weary Caribbean.

Forecasters at the National Hurricance Center in Miami said Maria could be near major hurricane intensity when it affects portions of the Leeward Islands over the next few days.

The Miami-based Carnival Glory's Sept. 16 cruise is going to call at Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, Roatán and Cozumel, while Carnival Magic's Sept. 16 sailing from Port Canaveral will visit Amber Cove, Montego Bay, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Carnival Fascination's Sept. 17 cruise from San Juan will visit Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua and St. Kitts.

Hurricane warnings were in effect for Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat, while tropical storm warnings were in effect for Antigua and Barbuda, Saba and St. Eustatius, and St. Lucia.

A hurricane watch is in effect for the British and US Virgin Islands, Saba and St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, St. Martin and St. Bathelemy and Anguilla, and soon could be extended to Puerto Rico.

Forecasters said Maria is likely to affect the British and US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by mid-week as a dangerous major hurricane.
