Carnival Liberty on Saturday became the first cruise ship to berth at the British Virgin Islands' expanded pier at Road Town, Tortola.

The ship tied up alongside the northeastern berth, which was completed a few weeks ago.

Work continues to have the entire pier ready in time for the official opening on April 29, when Norwegian Getaway is scheduled to arrive.

The pier has been lengthened to 1,039 feet, with mooring dolphins adding 273 feet, giving a total of 1,312 feet of berthing space. Once completed, the pier will be 60 feet wide and will accommodate two ships of 180,000gt.
