A woman who went overboard from a Royal Caribbean International ship in the East China Sea was rescued after spending 38 hours in the water.

The Chinese woman, 31, went overboard from Mariner of the Seas at around 9 p.m. Wednesday and was found by a fishing boat at about 11 a.m. Friday. The ship had been sailing between Fukuoka, Japan, and Shanghai.

According to local news reports that cited the Shanghai Daily, the woman had nothing to hold onto and struggled to stay awake and afloat. She also had to swim out of the path of big ships.

Apart from jellyfish stings, she is reportedly in good condition.

'We are grateful to learn that our guest is safe,' Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez told Seatrade Cruise News in an email. 'Many of our crew members assisted in searching for her, and we all share the family's relief in her safe return home.'

Martinez expressed Royal Caribbean's appreciation to the crew of the vessel that rescued the woman for their care and professionalism.

She added that safety procedures were strictly followed during the incident, including notifying and receiving guidance from authorities.

Martinez said Royal Caribbean is respecting the woman's desire for privacy.
