Gonzalo Davagnino, gm of Empresa Portuaria Valparaíso, will serve as treasurer, and Cristina Orellana, vp of Empresa Portuaria Puerto Montt, was appointed secretary.
Sackel noted Chile has made significant progress on the cruise front in recent years, and he hopes to continue the momentum. Currently one of Conosur's main tasks is to persuade lawmakers to ease cabotage for foreign-flag cruise ships carrying more than 400 passsengers. Congress is considering such a bill.
Also important to Chile's cruise business will be the opening of a new terminal at Valparaíso this year.
'The port and tourism community must work hand in hand to consolidate our country's position as an attractive and competitive destination on the international cruise circuit,' Sackel said. 'The outlook for the global cruise industry is very positive. As a country, we should live up to that growth,' he added.
