The Guardians are an initiative of the Piazza San Marco Association with the goal of ensuring the sustainability of this important historic place.
Twenty of them will be on hand daily from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. thorugh September.
The Guardians will also inform Metropolitan Police Headquarters of any violations of municipal laws they discover when on duty.
Recognizable by their orange sweaters, the San Marco Guardians speak a number of languages. They were trained by the Metropolitan Police and the Tourism Management Office of Venice Municipal Administration.
