Neil Palomba - Costa aims to make Savona a long-term reference for sustainable development in cruising
Costa Cruises contributes nearly €38.6m to the economy of Savona, its leading Italian port, and creates 661 full-time-equivalent jobs there.

These are the findings of a study commissioned by Costa and carried out by PwC Italia, presented Monday in the presence of officials from Savona and Liguria.

Savona Mayor Ilaria Caprioglio said the numbers show Costa's importance to the community, with economic impact generated from the Palacrociere cruise terminal, ships, passengers and crew. The findings 'support our commitment to continue developing new strategies for the growth of the cruise industry in Savona, working together with the region of Liguria and Costa Cruises,' the mayor added.

Giovanni Toti, president of the Liguria region, said the study confirms how the line and local institutions, working together, have created new initiatives to develop tourism such as walking tours to discover Savona and its local products. The regional council promotes Liguria with campaigns like #Lamialiguria, which uses pictures and videos to entice new visitors.

Costa's economic impact includes €18.9m from passenger spending, €13m by the company and €6.6m from crew spending.

These figures are the result of 230 annual calls that bring 325,000 embarking passengers to the city, 334,000 cruisers in transit and an average of 860 crew members for each ship operating at the port.

Annual spending per passenger is €96, which translates to €1,020 per Savona resident.

Costa president Neil Palomba said the study reflects the value of collaborating with local councils and the company's investments made over the years. Costa intends to continue these efforts, he added, making Savona a long-term reference for sustainable development in cruising.

The line's new LNG ships are a sign of that commitment. The first arrives in 2019 and will be positioned in Savona.

The economic impact study springs from a collaboration among Costa, Savona and the port authority that was formalized in a three-year memorandum of understanding in November 2015.
