An expert in travel industry law, Maria successfully defended a class action in 2015 brought by 43 passengers who suffered norovirus on Thomson Spirit, proving that the cause was not the ship.
David Waring, chairman of Hill Dickinson, called Maria a much loved colleague.
'Her total commitment to her work and her clients remained undiminished right to the end, which makes her passing even more of a shock to us all and particularly all those ... who have worked with her over the past 30 years,' Waring added.
Andy Harmer, vp operations & director CLIA UK & Ireland, paid tribute to Maria's 'commitment to the cruise sector and her knowledge and expertise in maritime and tourism issues.' He also recognised her 'willingness to give up her free time to work with CLIA and alongside its cruise line members to help secure the best future for the whole industry.'
Harmer added: 'She was an absolute delight to work with, was always positive and friendly, and I know that the whole industry will miss her terribly.'
Hill Dickinson has opened a book of condolence for Maria, who died Wednesday.
Among those leaving messages, Jo Rzymowska, managing director, Celebrity Cruises UK & Ireland & APAC, wrote: 'Such devastating news. Maria was an incredible professional and wonderful person and a great support during my time as CLIA UK chair. My thoughts are with her family and all her colleagues at this sad time.'
Maria is survived by her husband Takis and three children.
