Cruise operators monitor Bangkok following bomb blast

Cruise operators monitor Bangkok following bomb blast
Cruise operators including Royal Caribbean, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises told Seatrade Cruise News they are closely monitoring the Bangkok situation following Monday evening's bombing of a religious shrine in the main shopping area. So far, they have not changed itineraries.

The blast killed at least 20 people and injured more than 100, according to news reports.

'Our hearts go out to those affected by the tragic events in Bangkok. Although we have no scheduled calls to Bangkok in the near future, we are closely monitoring the situation and will make itinerary adjustments if appropriate,' said a spokesman for Prestige Cruise Holdings, the parent of Regent and Oceania.

Destination Asia Thailand reported calm is returning to the Thai capital.

'Currently the atmosphere around the city remains calm and people are going about their daily business as normal,' the tour operator said in a Tuesday newsletter update.

The Rajaprasong intersection, where the blast shattered the Erawan Shrine, a Hindu temple, remained closed on Tuesday morning, and police were seeking an individual identified as a suspect from video footage.

'At this point Bangkok continues to function as normal with most businesses and offices routinely operating and people able to move around the city freely,' Destination Asia Thailand said. The company added that shopping malls are open and public transport systems including the subway, Airport Rail Link and rail and bus services from Bangkok to the provinces are operating normally.

Destination Asia Thailand is advising clients to be sensitive to surroundings while exploring Bangkok.
