The cruise business contributed $49.9m to New Brunswick's economy in 2016, according to Port Saint John. That is a 20% increase from the $41.5m in 2012.

Announced at the Saint John Port Days event this week, the figures come from an economic impact study conducted by Business Research & Economic Advisors and carried out in partnership with the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association.

The total impact included direct spending by cruise lines, passengers and crew of $21.5m, 298 direct jobs in the province and $12.5m in personal income.

'This economic impact study reinforces the importance of the cruise sector in the Province of New Brunswick, and it highlights the fact that while the ships come to the port, it is the entire region that makes this destination successful for visitors,' said Jim Quinn, president and ceo, Port Saint John.

In 2017, Saint John marks 29 years of welcoming cruise visitors. Sixty-four calls and approximately 144,000 passengers are expected during the season that stretches to Nov. 1.
