A record 580 delegates attended Cruise360 Australasia at Hyatt Regency Sydney on Friday, including a record 90 from New Zealand.

First Cruise Destination Showcase

On Thursday there was a luncheon and ship inspection on board Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney Cove and in the afternoon delegates had a preview of the first Cruise Destination Showcase. Exhibitors included Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, Monaco, Singapore, Japan and New York, as well as local tourism bodies from Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and New Zealand.

When the inaugural Cruise360 Australasia was held in 2014, it was the first outside of North America.

‘By making the decision to invest time and resources to attend this conference, you are committing yourself to becoming a better cruise sales agent,’ Joel Katz, CLIA Australasia and Asia md, said.

Nearly 95% of Australians have never cruised

‘Our goal today is to help you develop and drive your cruise business further, whether it is through the information presented during our conference and breakout sessions, or the networking opportunities provided throughout the day or, hopefully, a combination of both,’ Katz said.

He talked about the opportunities for every travel agent, saying that nearly 95% of Australians have never cruised.

‘This should give us confidence, knowing there is a lot of opportunity for further growth,’ he said.

He announced that next year’s event will be held on August 30 and said agents should book now as this year’s conference was a sell-out.

New training program

Katz also announced the launch of CLIA Australasia’s Cruise Industry Traineeship Program and its alliance with training provider, TAFE NSW and Apprenticeship Support Australia.

He said the traineeship programme is designed to equip new industry entrants with industry relevant, job-ready skills to fill employment opportunities.
