David Brown envisages shore excursions as part of his new job
Business development manager David Brown is leaving Port of Newcastle after a highly successful career in developing the region as a desirable international cruise ship destination.

Brown became the project manager of Cruise Hunter in 2006 after it was set up by Priscilla Radice in 2002 to put the bulk export port of Newcastle on the international cruise industry map.

At the time Radice was told that Newcastle — 170kms north of Sydney and gateway to the Hunter Valley vineyards — was too close to Sydney to be a stop for cruise ships.

Undeterred, Radice proved the sceptics wrong and in January 2003 Seatrade Cruise News was there when Hapag-Lloyd’s Europa made the first international cruise ship visit.

In June 2014 Brown took on his current role as business development manager with the core responsibility of implementing strategic plans for the continued development of the international cruise industry.

There are 11 cruise ship visits currently scheduled for 2019, commencing with Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Solstice on January 5.

Brown, a committee member of the Australian Cruise Association for six years, with three as deputy chair, expects to be involved with shore excursions in his new job as team leader visitor experience with the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.
