The 130-meter Sea Cloud Spirit will be rigged with 17 sails
DNV GL has been awarded a contract for the classification of Sea Cloud Spirit, under construction at Metalships & Docks in Vigo, Spain.

Jorge Dahl, business development manager Iberia, DNV GL, and Metalships & Docks' Alberto Iglesias, managing director, and Vicente Santiago, commercial manager, met in Vigo to sign the agreement.

The 130-meter sailing yacht, ordered by Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises, will be able to carry 136 passengers and 85 crew. Twenty-five cabins will have a balcony, and an elevator will connect the five decks. Hamburg's Partner Ship Design is creating the interiors.

4,000 square meters of sails

The three-masted Sea Cloud Spirit will be rigged with 27 sails with an overall surface area of 4,000 square meters. Additional propulsion will be provided by two 1,700 KW diesel-electric engines.

Delivery is set for summer 2020.

'We are very pleased that Metalships & Docks has chosen DNV GL as the preferred classification partner for this high-end sailing ship. The yard specializes in the construction of technically sophisticated ships, and we look forward to continuing our close collaboration on this exciting project,' said Torgeir Sterri, regional manager West Europe at DNV GL – Maritime.

'Knowing that both DNV GL and Metalships & Docks are working on this project gives us confidence that it will be an outstanding vessel, delivered on time with the highest level of quality and safety,' added Daniel Schäfer, managing director, Sea Cloud Cruises.
