Emerald Waterways held its final christening of 2017, for Emerald Liberté—the third in a trio of new Star Ships to launch this year—on Sunday, in Lyon, France. Australian travel industry veteran and longtime cruise and tour director Maxine Collins served as the godmother.

The Emerald Waterways brand, a division of Scenic, is exclusively marketed in Australia by Evergreen Cruises and Tours.

‘Maxine has led over 200 tours and escorted around 5,000 Evergreen and Scenic guests around the world during her 28 years with the company and has been one of our most popular and highly-regarded ambassadors,' said Angus Crichton, general manager, Evergreen Cruises and Tours.

‘She was the clear choice as godmother to Emerald Liberté as a tribute to her commitment to excellence and a lifetime of service with our company,’ Crichton said.

As Emerald Waterways' first Star Ship in France, Emerald Liberté was custom-built especially for the Rhône and Saône. It features clean lines and contemporary style, plus innovations like a pool that turns into a cinema at night, and drop-down glass balcony windows in all suites. The boutique ship can carry 138 passengers and has a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:3.

Emerald Liberté sails the Provence and Burgundy region on eight-night cruises from Lyon and Arles between April and October. The itinerary includes Chalon-Sur-Saône, Beaune, Macon, Tournon and historic Avignon where passengers are treated to an on-board, Provençal-style dinner by acclaimed local chef and 'Top Chef France' finalist Fabien Morreale.

The christening follows the official launch of Emerald Radiance in Porto, Portugal, in June with top UK travel agent Gill Williams as godmother. Emerald Destiny was named in Vienna in May by Canadian newscaster Coleen Christie.

The Emerald Waterways fleet has grown to seven vessels since the company's 2014 launch. This year alone the river cruise line has carried more than 17,000 passengers on the Rhine, Main and Danube, Portugal’s Douro and the Rhône and Saône.
