Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' Europa 2 is scheduled to pay its first visit to the Port of New Orleans on Monday for a two-night stay. The 516-passenger ship will dock at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal.

'Port-call vessels typically have a wide-ranging impact on the local economy as passengers, who are often international, have the opportunity to spend a few days exploring everything the city and the surrounding region has to offer,' port president and ceo Gary LaGrange said.

Port officials will host a plaque exchange with Europa 2's captain on Monday.

The ship is scheduled to sail Wednesday for Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean before heading to the South Pacific to spend the winter months in Australia and New Zealand.

In other transit-call business, Azamara Quest is scheduled Oct. 25-26, AIDAvita for four overnight calls beginning Nov. 5, P&O Cruises' Oriana Nov. 8-9 and Azura Dec. 22-24. Crystal Serenity is booked for Dec. 6-7.

Last year the Port of New Orleans handled 1,023,700 cruise passenger movements. 2016 numbers are on pace to break the 2015 mark with the addition of newer and larger homeported ships.

Currently Carnival Cruise Line offers a variety of year-round itineraries aboard the 2,754-passenger Carnival Triumph sailing four- and five-day cruises and the 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream sailing seven-day cruises to the eastern and western Caribbean. Norwegian Cruise Line's 2,340-passenger Norwegian Dawn will return next month to operate weekly cruises through May.
