Fincantieri's Ancona lays keel for Viking's sixth ocean ship

A keel-laying ceremony for the sixth of eight ocean-going ships Viking Cruises has ordered from Fincantieri took place today at the Ancona yard.

The 47,800gt vessel has capacity for 930 passengers and is scheduled for delivery in 2019.

This first building block measures approximately 11 meters long and 28.8 meters wide and weighs about 380 tons.

The ship follows Viking Star, built at Marghera in 2015 and Viking Sea, Viking Sky and Viking Sun, delivered from Ancona in 2016 and 2017. Viking's 2018 newbuild, Viking Orion, was floated out at Ancona a few weeks ago and is due for delivery in the summer.

Two additional Viking ships are scheduled for 2021 and 2022.

Fincantieri has constructed 79 cruise vessels since 1990, including 56 since 2002, while another 32 are currently being designed or built in the group’s yards.
