Cruise arrivals to Grenada rose 14.5% in 2018, and the Grenada Tourism Authority implemented its Cruise Guest Experience Project last March to improve tourism offerings.

Maiden calls

In addition, seven new ships visited in the recent September to January period. The maiden calls were Carnival Breeze (Sept. 28), Marella Explorer and Oceania Cruises' Sirena (Nov. 10), AIDAperla (Nov. 21), Celebrity Reflection and MSC Preziosa (Dec. 13) and Viking Sun (Jan. 8).

Cruise Guest Experience Project

As part of the tourism authority's campaign to elevate the visitor experience, the Melville Street Cruise Terminal and Esplanade Mall were improved, along with the walking experience from the port to St. George’s Market. Additionally, eight storyboards were commissioned at the Melville Street Terminal that feature themes including the island’s markets, forest reserve, chocolate, agro-tourism, rums and beaches, with the goal of inspiring cruisers to book related tours.

New excursions

Seven new tours were implemented for the current cruise season, with more to come for the 2019/20 season. The new experiences feature culinary, garden/horticulture and sailing themes. They include Grand Vista Adventure Buggy, Palm Tree Gardens, Spice It Up - Culinary, Pure Sailing & Paddle Boarding, Forts & Beaches, Grand Etang Cocoa Experience & Rum Sampling and Spice Garden & Westerhall Distillery Rum Tasting.

Other new additions to Grenada's tourism offering include hiking tours with Hidden Treasures and a new hiking tour company, Wondering Soles. A new restaurant, Spice Affair, opened on Lance Aux Epines featuring Indian, Oriental, European and American cuisine. The well-known Aquarium Restaurant on Morne Rouge Beach underwent a complete refurbishment in November that created a larger bar and open-concept kitchen and installed new furniture.

Grand Anse Jetty

Commissioned last July, the Grand Anse Jetty enables cruise visitors to be taxied from the port to the famous beach within minutes and provides the opportunity to experience the area conveniently and for a longer amount of time.
