Amid cruise industry reports of continued challenges for North American bookings in the Mediterranean and strong demand for Alaska, Holland America Line is shifting a ship from Europe to Alaska in 2017.

Oosterdam will join HAL's Alaska fleet, making seven ships there and a total of 135 departures. The other vessels are Amsterdam, Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Volendam and Zaandam.

HAL marks 70 years in Alaska in 2017, when changes include the Signature-class Eurodam replacing Westerdam sailing from Seattle.

'As Seattle’s hometown cruise line, we’re thrilled to be sailing three ships from our local homeport for the next Alaska season,' HAL president Orlando Ashford said.

The line will now offer 126 seven-day cruises and nine 14-day 'Great Alaskan Explorer' sailings that begin in late April and run through late September. Highlights include 46 seven-day cruises round-trip from Vancouver, BC, on Nieuw Amsterdam, Volendam, Noordam and Zaandam. In addition, Noordam and Zaandam each will sail 18 open-jaw north-south seven-day cruises between Vancouver and Seward.

Oosterdam is scheduled for 21 week-long round-trips from Seattle, April through September. Eurodam will depart Seattle on 22 seven-day round-trips, while Amsterdam is to sail one seven-day cruise from Seattle followed by nine 14-day 'Great Alaskan Explorer' voyages.

Oosterdam’s itinerary includes Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and BC's Victoria. The route provides scenic cruising in Puget Sound, Stephens Passage and at Hubbard Glacier.

Departing on nine 'Great Alaskan Explorer'-branded sailings, Amsterdam replaces Maasdam in 2017 on a route that includes calls at Anchorage, Icy Strait Point, Homer, Kodiak and Hubbard Glacier.

All cruises from Seattle call at Sitka, Ketchikan, Juneau and Victoria, with a visit to Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier. All Glacier Bay itineraries include park ranger and Huna native speaker presentations.

HAL began Alaska trips in 1947 with a simple, spontaneous tour in Fairbanks. That has grown into the comprehensive Alaska Land+Sea Journeys offered today. The 70th anniversary will be marked with celebrations throughout the year that will be announced at a later date.
