Well-positioned to handle big ships
'Cruise ships are getting bigger, which means more passengers sailing on a single vessel and, as a big ship port, Halifax is well-positioned to take these larger ships,' said Cathy McGrail, associate VP, strategy and cruise for the Halifax Port Authority. 'At the same time, tourism as an industry in Nova Scotia continues to develop. There is more for those cruise guests to see and do in Halifax and in Nova Scotia when they arrive.'
320,000 passengers projected
From April 8 to Nov. 6, the port is expecting 192 vessel calls carrying approximately 320,000 passengers.
Inaugural calls and a day with two Cunard Queens
The season's highlights include eight inaugural calls, starting with the arrival of Holland America Line's Zaandam on May 13. On July 26, two Cunard Queens will visit: Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2, among four scheduled visits by QM2 (the others are July 2, Sept. 13 and Oct. 16). Disney Magic will arrive Sept. 23.
Oct. 2 is expected to be the busiest passenger day with more than 10,000 cruisers on five vessels.
