Years ago, Holland America Line broke out of cruising's typical fall-foliage-period-only rut in Canada/New England by sending its ships to the region in spring and summer as well.

Three ships

That continues in 2019, when the line offers 34 departures between April and October. Travelers can select from among nine itineraries of seven to 12 days aboard Veendam, Zaandam and Zuiderdam.

'Canada and New England used to be known as a fall cruise destination for the foliage, but has become popular in warmer weather as well given all the spectacular features the region has to offer,' Holland America president Orlando Ashford said. Canada/New England, he added, is 'very attractive for summer family cruising.'

Beginning in April, Zaandam, Zuiderdam and Veendam sail a diverse collection of seven-, 10-, 11- and 12-day cruises departing from Boston, New York City, Montréal, Québec City and from or to Florida's Port Everglades. Destinations include Canada’s Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island), Sydney (Cape Breton) and Halifax, as well as Bar Harbor, Maine.

Zaandam in the summer

On April 24, Zaandam kicks off the spring season with a 10-day 'Atlantic Coast' repositioning cruise from Fort Lauderdale, with calls at Boston, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and Québec City, before concluding at Montréal.

From May through September, Zaandam offers a series of seven-day 'Canada and New England Discovery' cruises between Montréal and Boston, calling at Boston, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and Québec City, with cruising in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Fall colors

Zuiderdam launches the fall season with a 12-day 'Colors of Canada and New England' cruise Sept. 3, sailing from Boston to Québec City. Ports are Sydney, Halifax, Charlottetown, Saint John, Corner Brook, Baie-Comeau, Saguenay and Portland. While cruising through the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Zuiderdam visits Saguenay Fjord.

The ship offers two similar itineraries Sept. 15 and Sept. 27. The Sept. 15 voyage will overnight at Québec City before heading to Saguenay, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax, Saint John, Portland, Boston and, finally, Newport (Rhode Island), prior to disembarking in New York City. The Sept. 27 voyage departs from New York to many of the same ports, as well as additions like Portland and Gloucester (Massachusetts). The cruise ends with an overnight at Québec City.

Montréal-Boston

In September, Veendam will operate a series of seven-day 'Canada and New England Discovery' between Montréal and Boston. Ports include Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and Québec City, as well as cruising through the Gulf of St. Lawrence and along the Saint Lawrence River.

Throughout October, Zaandam, Zuiderdam and Veendam will each operate one 11-day 'Atlantic Coast' cruise to reposition them back to Florida. Zaandam and Veendam depart from Montréal and Zuiderdam from Québec City, on varied itineraries.
