The new partnership between shipbuilders T. Mariotti and Damen, which will collaborate under the Mariotti Damen Cruise banner, provides flexibility in responding to client needs, said Damen's Andrea Trevisan, SVP cruise sales & marketing.

More orders in the pipeline

The partnership is starting with the just-announced luxury expedition newbuilds for Seabourn, but there are a number of other newbuilding cruise projects in the pipeline, Trevisan told Seatrade Cruise News.

For the Seabourn project, Damen will build the hulls, and T. Mariotti will handle the outfitting.

'The strength of this new brand is its flexibility in responding to client needs,' Trevisan said. 'For this reason, in future projects the companies’ respective tasks and responsibilities may change in order to leverage each other’s assets and ensure prime quality client service.'

Not a new company but a common brand

Mariotti Damen Cruise is not a new company but a common brand created by the two venerable shipbuilders. Both are family-owned, with 90-year histories. The partnership, according to Trevisan, is aimed at sharing their expertise and facilities with the goal of building high-quality cruise ships.

Mariotti Damen Cruise will act as a single interface for current and prospective clients, 'strengthening sales and marketing forces from both companies, always aiming to provide best customer solutions and experience for cruise newbuilding projects,' Trevisan said.

Based in the Netherlands, Damen is a family-owned international shipyard group that has built more than 6,000 vessels of all kinds. Its global workforce numbers more than 9,000, and the yards have production capacity for 180 vessels a year.

Damen is also active in the cruise ship repairs, refitting and maintenance business. A recent project was the two-week docking of P&O Cruises' 116,000gt Ventura at Damen Shiprepair Brest in April.

T. Mariotti focus on ultra-luxury cruise ships

Genoa-based T. Mariotti specializes in ultra-luxury cruise shipbuilding, megayacht and supply vessel construction. Founded in 1928 as a ship repair workshop, in the 1990s the company became a shipbuilder, with clients that have included Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn.

More recently T. Mariotti has also built mega-yachts and offshore vessels. In 2008, T. Mariotti and another Genoa company, repairs specialist San Giorgio del Porto, formed Genova Industrie Navali Holding Co., which handles repairs, maintenance and conversions for all types of ships, including passenger vessels. Chantier Naval de Marseille is also part of the group.
