Dressed in black and white with a sash made of Newfoundland's green tartan, these ambassadors were well-received for the season's first ship, Oceania Cruises' Insignia in June, according to Nora Fever, business development manager, Corner Brook Port Corp.
The downtown ambassadors are planned to be on hand for every cruise call.
Corner Brook continues a $1m downtown revitalization with features that benefit cruise visitors. The sidewalk on the main street from the port was redone in red brick, consistent with the downtown. Pocket parks and improved signage are other aspects of the project that's scheduled to be completed this year.
Cruise numbers in Newfoundland and Labrador are expected to almost double in 2017. For Corner Brook, it will be an average year, Fever said, with maiden calls including Fred. Olsen's Boudicca and Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas.
2018 looks stronger, with a first visit by Crystal Symphony and a return call by Queen Mary 2. Plus, AIDA Cruises will be visiting for the first time.
'Their passengers are quite active. It's a great fit for us,' Fever noted, since Corner Brook offers hiking, kayaking and zip-lining, plus the AIDA ship carries its own fleet of bicycles.
AIDA's Dana Keller, supervisor, shore excursion program, visited as part of a familiarization trip prior to the recent Canada/New England Cruise Symposium in Montréal.
Also, as the Canada/New England region strives to stretch the cruise season, Corner Brook is starting to see more summer calls, especially in 2018, Fever said.
