Italy ranks most popular during this period, followed (in order) by France, the UK, South Africa, Spain, Mexico, China, Australia, New Zealand and Israel.
The data were sourced from Virtuoso's more than $35bn in transactions.
Virtuoso said Europe's unrivaled popularity for summer travel continues into the fall when lower average daily rates are available at the network's partner hotels in major cities. In particular, Paris prices are down 2% ($1,087), Rome is 6% less expensive ($949), London is down 7% ($704) and Barcelona's fall rates ($596) are 15% lower than in summer.
Also noteworthy, Virtuoso said: Mexico's appeal as a warm-weather getaway for Americans and Canadians holds fast despite Zika cautions. Australia and New Zealand are always favored destinations once the Northern Hemisphere cools. In spite of continued Middle East unrest, Israel's popularity is undiminished. It is a sought-out destination, Virtuoso said, not only for its religious significance, but also for history, food, culture and adventure experiences.
When it comes to hottest international destinations—those growing the most year-over-year for Virtuoso, Kenya tops the list with a 59% increase in bookings. That's followed by Iceland (+56%), Saint Martin (+39%), China (+35%), Ecuador (+34%), Japan (+32%), South Africa (+28%), Tanzania (+27%), Croatia (+25%) and Jamaica (+23%).
According to Virtuoso's travel advisers, safaris are particularly appealing for multigenerational family trips with plenty to see for travelers of all ages. Iceland has been a growing favorite in recent years, and its prominent showing on Virtuoso's 'Hot 10' proves that its popularity is extending into the fall.
China has been trending upwards with luxury travelers over the past few years. While travel there is steady year-round, the last quarter of the year is the most popular time for visitors, aided by average daily rates that are 5% below average, Virtuoso said. Select Caribbean and South American destinations continue to see growth, with Saint Martin, Ecuador and Jamaica experiencing double-digit increases over last year.
Data are drawn from Virtuoso's US and Canadian-based travel agency members and reflect future travel for September through December. The findings do not include US and Canadian destinations.
The findings were announced during the annual Virtuoso Travel Week, taking place in Las Vegas.
