Kiel, together with Rostock, Germany's main Baltic hubs for cruises, has embarked into the 2018 season with a call of Fred. Olsen's Boudicca.

The 28,388gt ship, performing a ten-day itinerary from Dover with some 700 passengers onboard, arrived on Friday morning following an overnight Kiel Canal passage.

Kiel expects 166 cruise ship visits carrying about 600,000 passengers this year.

Boudicca docked at the Ostseekai Cruise Terminal right in the centre of Kiel. This facility will be equipped with a second terminal building due to become operational in spring 2019. Construction work will start after this year's peak summer season.

In contrast to most other operators, Fred. Olsen ships stop at Kiel specifically for transit calls featuring tours to destinations mainly in the State of Schleswig-Holstein.

Kiel's Town Council chairman, Hans-Werner Tovar, who was welcomed onboard by the master, praised the operator's role as a regular transit visitor to Kiel.

While transit calls constitute a growing niche heavily encouraged by the Port of Kiel, the vast majority of the port's cruise business accounts for turnarounds.

This year's first turnaround will take place on April 8 as AIDAcara embarks on a seven-day cruise to Scandinavian destinations.
