Man charged with girlfriend's murder aboard Carnival ship

A Topeka, Kansas man made his initial appearance in court on an indictment charging him with murdering his girlfriend during a January cruise on Carnival Elation.

Eric Newman, 53, was charged with murder in the second degree. The initial appearance was held before US Magistrate Judge Ross A. Walters.

Cruise operated round-trip Jacksonville

The indictment alleges that on or about Jan. 19, Newman was traveling on a round-trip cruise from Jacksonville board Carnival Elation, a ship registered in Panama. During the voyage, Newman is alleged to have killed Tamara Tucker, 50, of Lawson, Missouri.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the US Justice Department’s Criminal Division, US Attorney Stephen R. McAllister of the District of Kansas and Special Agent in Charge Charles P. Spencer of the FBI Jacksonville, Florida Field Office made the announcement.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Jacksonville Field Office with the assistance of the FBI Topeka Field Office. The case is being prosecuted by trial attorney Rami S. Badawy of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and Assistant US Attorney Christine E. Kenney of the District of Kansas.
