Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Meyer Werft executives gathered at the shipyard's laser center in Papenburg on Friday for the ceremonial start of construction of Norwegian Bliss, set for delivery in spring 2018.

It will be the 12th Norwegian ship built by Meyer.

Frank Del Rio, president and ceo, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, pressed the button to start the computer-controlled steel-cutting machine. The plate was sliced by a plasma torch and will become part of the first of 81 blocks that comprise the vessel.

Third in the line’s Breakaway-Plus class, the 167,800gt Norwegian Bliss will have features and amenities for Alaska cruising.

'As we close in on Norwegian Cruise Line’s 50th anniversary, we are thrilled to celebrate the start of construction for Norwegian Bliss, our latest and most innovative ship yet,' Del Rio said. 'Norwegian Bliss will offer the ultimate in Alaska adventures, both on and off the ship,' he added, 'and we look forward to welcoming guests on board in June 2018.'
