KT Lim pushes the button to start laser cutting as Bernard Meyer looks on
Meyer Werft cut steel for the Star Cruises newbuild Genting World, which will sport more than 30 food and beverage outlets, a night street market with hawker stalls, a children's water park and a vast shopping area with international brands.

Genting Hong Kong chairman Tan Sri KT Lim pushed the button to start the plasma torch cutting the first plate of steel at the Papenburg yard's laser center.

Lim called it 'a proud for all of us at Genting Hong Kong, especially for me,' as the steel-cutting ceremony 'marks a new chapter for Genting Hong Kong, reaffirming our Star Cruises brand as the leader in Asian cruise travel.' He said Genting World and a sister vessel 'will enable us to continue to strengthen and further enhance our competitiveness across our key source markets.'

Managing partner Bernard Meyer said Meyer Werft is glad to continue its long relationship with Star Cruises that began 20 years ago with the construction of SuperStar Leo.

Delivery of the 151,000gt Genting World is planned for fall 2016, with a sister to be handed over in fall 2017. Each will have capacity for about 4,500 passengers.

Each ship is 324 meters long, 39.7 meters at the beam and designed for a top speed of about 23 knots.

Star Cruises said its new vessels will provide greater choice with a wide range of activities, amenities and staterooms, including villas, with the latest features.

Each ship will have more than 30 food and beverage outlets. One highlight will be a special street night market with hawker stalls serving Asian delicacies from various countries.

A modern theatre, 'world-class' recreation, health and fitness spaces, and facilities for the meeting, incentive and convention market are planned, long with a children's water park and water slides.

About 1,000 square meters of space will be dedicated to retail featuring a variety of international luxury brands.
