Meyer Werft laid the keel for Saga Cruises' first newbuild, Spirit of Discovery, during festivities in Papenburg today.

'Lucky' coins

Lance Batchelor, CEO of Saga Group; Sir Sebastian Wood, Britain's ambassador in Berlin; and Tim Meyer, managing director of Meyer Werft, placed a 'lucky' coin beneath the first block. It was stamped with Spirit of Discovery’s name, keel-laying date and 'S714,' its newbuild number at the yard.

This first of 54 blocks weighs 320 tons and is 5.5 meters/18 feet high, 23.5 meters/77 feet long and 20 meters/65.6 feet wide.

The 58,250gt ship, scheduled for delivery in summer 2019, is the first of two newbuilds ordered by Saga Cruises. The second will follow in summer 2020. Each measures 236 meters/774 feet in length and 31.2 meters/102 feet at the beam.

'Both ships have been designed to epitomise Saga’s unique British boutique cruising concept and are the only small, new, luxury ships to be built for the British market,' Batchelor said.

Meyer now has capacity to deliver three ships a year

The first ship will be assembled in the yard's Building Dock I.

The activation of this dock means that Meyer can deliver three ships a year to various customers in 2019 and 2020, instead of two.

This means additional jobs will be available, Tim Meyer pointed out.
