Nanaimo plans activities for back-to-back cruise calls
Central Vancouver Island's Nanaimo is scheduled to host calls by Coral Princess on Sunday and Celebrity Infinity on Monday.

'We are so fortunate to be located in one of the most desirable destinations in the world and once travelers discover what we have here, many plan to return,' said Bernie Dumas, president and ceo, Nanaimo Port Authority. 'Our Island hospitality program with several partners is exceptional and I know from passengers’ feedback that our product is one of the best you can find anywhere.'

Coral Princess will arrive as part of a 23-day voyage starting at Vancouver, BC, and ending at Fort Lauderdale with calls in Oregon, California, Mexico, Central America and Colombia.

Celebrity Infinity will be on an eight-day cruise that also originates in Vancouver. The ship will visit San Francisco and Victoria, BC, before returning to Vancouver.

Both ships will offer regional shore excursions to the Alberni and Cowichan valleys including the Parksville-Qualicum area. As passengers step into the cruise terminal, they'll be greeted by Tourism Nanaimo Travel counselors and pointed to photo opportunities with Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers in red serge, the ‘Big Tub’ and displays of racing tubs from the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society. Cannons at the historic Bastion will be fired at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Samples of a local confection, the Nanaimo Bar, will be distributed to passengers, and Shakespeare by the Sea, a production on the Pioneer Waterfront Plaza features 'Much Ado About Nothing' on Sunday and Monday at 1:30 p.m.

Free shuttles will transport passengers from the cruise terminal through downtown Nanaimo.

'Economically, this cruise call will have an average immediate impact of over $300,000 to the region,' Dumas said.
