Steve Odell said New Zealand is still an emerging source market
Though modest in global terms, New Zealand’s ocean cruise passenger count jumped 10% in 2015 to a record 66,152, making the country one of the world’s top performing markets.

New Zealand was one of just three international cruise source markets to record a double-digit increase last year, beaten ony by Australia and emerging hot spot China, travel agents and media were told at Tuesday function at Crowne Plaza Auckland, hosted by CLIA Australasia chairman Steve Odell and commercial director Brett Jardine.
 
The annual New Zealand Cruise Industry Source Market Report for 2015 was based soley on ocean cruising, in line with CLIA global reporting.
 
Figures for the river cruise market will be released separately.
 
Odell said 1.4% of the population took a cruise last year with New Zealand now ranked sixth in the world for market penetration, ahead of many established cruise nations including Italy (1.3%), Spain (1%) and France (0.9%).
 
Cruises around New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific continued to account for the majority of passengers (54%). The number of New Zealanders cruising around Australia was up 71%. The figure for Asia was up 64%.
 
CLIA Australasia’s 2015 Australian Cruise Industry Source Market Report will be unveiled at Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal on Thursday.
