Norwegian Cruise Line’s 93,502gt Norwegian Jewel returned to Sydney Friday after a five-day maiden ‘Taste of Tasmania’ voyage to Burnie and Hobart.

The 2,376-passenger liner arrived in Sydney on November 12 for her inaugural homeport season in Australia and New Zealand which runs until February 2018.

She will return for a second 2018/19 summer season that will include ports in the South Pacific after a multi-million dollar bow-to-stern  refurbishment.

She is the first Norwegian Cruise Line ship to homeport locally for a full cruising season and svp and md Asia Pacific Steve Odell said  this highlights Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ long-term focus on the region.

In Hobart the ceo of the Australian Cruise Association, Jill Abel, exchanged plaques with  Capt. Kenneth Harstrom at a champagne and  canapes reception on the bridge.

Abel, who has a 22-year cruise industry career in Australia, joined what was Cruise Down Under in 2005 as gm and in 2015 was named ceo.

She was previously eo of Cruise Tasmania and special events manager for Tasports.

A former commodore of the Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Abel has arranged to take Harstrom, a keen yachtsman, sailing when Norwegian Jewel returns to Hobart in February.
