Norwegian Cruise Line's first ship built for China reached its new homeport, Shanghai, and operated a preview sailing for 1,700 VIP members and guests of Alibaba Group.

Nowegian Joy arrived in Shanghai after maiden calls at Singapore, Qingdao, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has a partnership with Alibaba, the world's largest online and mobile commerce company.

'Norwegian Joy's arrival demonstrates our commitment to the Chinese cruise market,' said David Herrera, president, NCLH China. It was a pleasure, he added, to welcome Alibaba’s members and guests to a 'First Class at Sea' experience during the preview cruise.

Herrera said the voyage supports one of the Alibaba partnership's main objectives: to promote, develop and expand the awareness and attraction of cruising among Chinese travelers.

Norwegian Joy offers the first racetrack at sea, innovative virtual reality experiences and 28 local and international dining options. A number of staterooms were designed for multigenerational families. Las Vegas-style entertainment and luxury shopping options are other features.

The Alibaba cruise sailed to Kochi, Japan, before returning to Shanghai today.

The ship’s naming ceremony will take place on June 27 in Shanghai, with ‘King of Chinese Pop' Wang Leehom serving as godfather. Regular service from Shanghai begins June 28, with a stint of cruises from Tianjin Aug. 26 to Sept. 15.
