A number of Norwegian cruise ports and organizations are joining forces to reduce the environmental impact from cruise ships while in port.

Together with DNV GL, the ports of Bergen, Stavanger, Oslo, Flåm (Aurland), Geirangerfjord (Stranda), Ålesund, Trondheim, Norwegian Ports Association, Innovation Norway, Norwegian Coastal Administration are looking to develop a tool to document emissions to air, discharge to sea, garbage handling and energy consumption from cruise ships while in port.

The tool will give an assessment of each ship’s impact on the environment and calculate an environmental score for each.

The goal is to encourage cruise lines to become more environmental friendly by offering a financial benefit for those ships that put in the extra effort to reduce their environmental impact while in port.

‘Norwegian ports seek to contribute to cleaner air and water, and our goal is to find a common solution that all the ports can use,’ says project manager Even Husby in Port of Bergen.

The solution will be made available to all ports wishing to use it, Husby said.
