Prince Edward Island's Charlottetown posted a record 2018 cruise season, bringing just shy of 98,000 passengers and 44,000 crew, representing a total direct economic impact of just over $16.5m, an 8.2% increase over 2017.

'While there were a number of cancellations due to weather and other factors, the season itself was the best year on record for the port,' said Mike Cochrane, CEO of Port Charlottetown. 'In addition to a record breaking year, we also hosted our first ever four ship day and a number of inaugurals, welcoming new cruise lines and new ships to Prince Edward Island.'

Inaugural calls

The inaugural calls were Silver Wind, Adventure of the Seas, Norwegian Gem, Royal Princess and Star Pride.

'We continue to see growth in the cruise market on Prince Edward Island and this is evident by the new calls and new lines visiting our region,' said Corryn Clemence, business development manager for the port. 'This is a great opportunity for local operators to showcase Prince Edward Island in its best light to new visitors and possibly welcome them back for repeat visits.'

According to Port Charlottetown, cruising's direct economic impact can be felt across the island, with many tours touching on a number of rural communities and businesses.

2019 looks even stronger

The 2019 cruise season is forecast to top 2018's, and the schedule will be released early in the new year.
