The redeveloped port will offer an outdoor pedestrian area and a new area for excursion providers
Atlantic Canada's Charlottetown plans to redevelop its port to be more 'cruise-friendly' this year and will rebrand as Port Charlottetown, Marine Gateway to Prince Edward Island.

Work will begin this spring. The port’s Vendor Village will be expanded and a new area will be created for shore excursion operators, allowing buses to park alongside the cruise terminal, according to a note from the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association.

The port’s outdoor areas will also be redeveloped to include a new loading area for taxis and a pedestrian plaza for passengers and crew.

'As we continue to grow our cruise business, our goal is to ensure we offer cruise guests a great first impression, with easy access and the ability to load our shore excursion tours quickly and efficiently,' said Les Parsons, ceo of Charlottetown Harbour Authority.

The rebranding to Port Charlottetown, Marine Gateway to Prince Edward Island, 'clearly defines who and what we are,' added Corryn Morrissey, the port’s business development manager. She said all the elements are part of the port's cruise strategy, completed by Bermello, Ajamil & Partners in 2013.

The redevelopment is expected to be completed this summer, ready for cruise visitors calling in autumn.

Charlottetown expects 76 cruise calls and just over 91,000 passengers in 2015.
