Madrid meeting between Ornella Chacon Martel and Airam Diaz Pastor
The presidents of MedCruise and Spanish Ports met to discuss the challenges facing the cruise industry and ways of collaboration to promote a sustainable cruise business across its member ports and in cities.

Airam Diaz Pastor, president of MedCruise, met with Ornella Chacon Martel, the newly elected president of Spanish Ports (Puertos del Estado), at the headquarters of her organisation in Madrid, where they had the opportunity to discuss about the future and challenges of the cruise industry as well as look for ways of collaboration in order to promote a sustainable cruise business in ports and cities of the region.

Diaz Pastor detailed tasks and actions that MedCruise is developing in different areas of expertise such as alternative fuels, IMO emissions regulations and cooperation with European bodies.

Chacon Martel took the opportunity to find out more about the Spanish ports members of MedCruise which account for 27% of the total cruise passenger movements handled by MedCruise members, placing Spain in second position within MedCruise rankings.

Diaz Pastor highlighted that 76% of cruise passengers visiting Spain in 2017, were welcomed by MedCruise members, shedding light on the important role that MedCruise plays in the Spanish Ports system in terms of cruise passengers and calls as well as cruise destinations.

Both presidents discussed ways of future collaboration and identified synergies for creating an action plan for growth expressing their interest in promoting both Spain and the entire Mediterranean as a sustainable cruise destination and working for a greener and cleaner cruise business.
