The Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Conference and Trade Show will be held in Puerto Rico for a four-year stint, starting in 2018.

The news was announced during Tuesday evening's FCCA conference opening ceremony in Puerto Rico by FCCA/Carnival Corp. & plc chairman Micky Arison.

It is unprecedented for the FCCA to return to a host destination for multiple consecutive years.

In 2017, the event will be held at Mérida in Mexico's Yucatán, and then in Puerto Rico from 2018 through 2021.

Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro García Padilla, who spoke at the FCCA event, welcomed the news.

He quipped that he might change from being a Celtics fan to the Miami Heat as a result of the decision.

Arison owns the Miami Heat.

The governor told FCCA delegates the cruise industry is one of the pillars of Puerto Rico's economy and a key to helping the island out of recession.

'We are delighted to host the FCCA for the next four years, starting in 2018,' he said.

García Padilla credited Ingrid Rivera Rocafort, executive director, Puerto Rico Tourism Co., for her efforts in helping his administration turn the tourism and cruise industries around. The governor is completing his term and not running for re-election, but he expressed the hope that his successor would ask Rivera to continue, a suggestion that got applause from the FCCA audience.
