The US Coast Guard at 8 p.m. Sunday set Port Condition X-Ray for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. This means the possibility of gale-force winds (39 mph) arriving from Maria, now a hurricane, within 48 hours.

The Coast Guard captain of the port San Juan anticipates setting port condition Yankee at 8 p.m. Monday for the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami predict Maria may strengthen into a major hurricane later on Monday. They said the storm is likely to affect the British and US Virgin Islands, both hard hit by Hurricane Irma, and Puerto Rico, by mid-week as a dangerous major hurricane.

Hurricane watches have been issued for the US and British Virgin Islands as well as Puerto Rico.
