Meyer Werft laid the keel for Royal Caribbean's fifth Quantum-class ship, Odyssey of the Seas, during festivities at its Neptun Werft yard in Wärnemünde on Friday. There, the engine room unit will be produced prior to further ship assembly in Papenburg.

The first steel parts for the ship were cut to size in the Meyer Werft Laser Center in February.

Closely follows Spectrum of the Seas

This second Quantum Ultra vessel, following the just-delivered Spectrum of the Seas, is due to be handed over in fall 2020.

It measures approximately 347 meters in length and 168,600gt with 4,200 lower berths.

During the ceremony, a massive block — one of 79 that will comprise Odyssey of the Seas — was lifted into the building dock. Newly minted coins were placed under the keel, where they'll remain until the end of construction. Once the ship is nearing completion, the 'lucky' coins are retrieved and presented to the captain and crew, to be displayed on board.

Odyssey of the Seas’ deployment and itineraries will be revealed later this year.

Representatives of Royal Caribbean International and Stephan Schmees, executive board member, project management at Meyer Werft, placed the coins.

Cooperation across locations

'With the keel-laying for Odyssey of the Seas at Neptun Werft it becomes clear, again, how well our teams at the different locations are working together,' Schmees said. 'It is our great pleasure to build these innovative ships for Royal Caribbean International and to continue our longstanding business relationship.'

Besides Spectrum of the Seas, which is headed to service in China, Quantum-class ships include Anthem of the Seas (2016), Ovation of the Seas (2015) and Quantum of the Seas (2014).
