A special program was created for the day. More than 160 volunteers dressed in the costumes of 'La Fabuleuse,' a long-running local production, were present to give passengers a memorable reception with traditional dances and samples of local products.
One of the day's highlights was when Saguenay Mayor Jean Tremblay, accompanied by dignitaries, welcomed Queen Mary 2 Capt. Kevin Oprey. He presented the captain with the sculpture of a beluga whale, a species found in the Saguenay Fjord.
The occasion also marked the 10th anniversary since the first major wharf facilities in Saguenay were completed that one day would accommodate the world's most famous cruise ship.
Saguenay's harbour village was filled with music throughout the day. The excitement escalated when Québec Issime presented a musical crescendo for Queen Mary 2's departure.
Passengers and onlookers ashore waved the vessel off with thousands of red festival flags. As Queen Mary 2 sailed from Saguenay Fjord toward the St. Lawrence River, villages along the way set off fireworks.
