Capt. Ingar Engan is remembered as a true gentleman
Capt. Ingar Engan, who worked on the building of Royal Viking Sea and sailed on all three of Royal Viking Line's original ships before going on to join the start-up team for Crystal Cruises and overseeing Crystal Harmony's construction, died Jan. 11. He had been in hospice at his home in Spain.

'Captain Engan will be remembered by his many friends and colleagues as a true gentleman. He was extremely, extremely well liked,' said Capt. Reidulf Maalen, director of Global Maritime Services and a veteran of Royal Viking Line and Crystal.

After many years with A.F. Klaveness, one of three Norwegian shipping companies that formed Royal Viking Line, Engan joined the site team at Wärtsilä Shipyard in Helsinki during the construction of Royal Viking Sea in 1971-72.

He worked for Royal Viking Line until 1988, sailing as chief officer, staff captain and captain, and serving as port captain at the company's headquarters in San Francisco.

In 1988, he moved to Los Angeles to become a part of Crystal's start-up team as SVP marine operations. He led the project team for Crystal Harmony's construction at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan.

Engan was with Crystal until 1994 when, according to Maalen, 'the longing for the fjords and mountains in his homeland of Norway became too strong and Captain Engan and his wife Anne-Lise moved back to Norway.'

There Engan worked for the Oslo Port Authority as traffic manager until his retirement in 2004.

Engan was a native of Os I Østerdalen in Hedmark. Since his retirement, he spent winters in Benitachell, Spain, and summers in Norway and Sweden.

A memorial gathering in Norway is planned at a future date.
