'Approximately 20% of the cruise ships at San Francisco stay overnight, which gives the guests more time to explore and enjoy the City by the Bay and its surroundings,' said Michael Nerney, maritime marketing manager for Port of San Francisco.
Visits of three or more days are rare, but they do happen, Nerney said—for example, Celebrity Infinity in 2015, Azamara Quest in 2014 and The World in 2012.
Sun Princess arrived at 10 a.m. Monday and is due to sail at 4 p.m. today. The ship came in under the command of Capt. Rikard Lorentzen, who signed off Tuesday and is being relieved by Capt. Diego Perra, who will complete the voyage back to Sydney.
Sun Princess is alongside Pier 35. During the ship's stay, Princess Cruises' year-round San Francisco vessel, Grand Princess, docked at Pier 27 on Tuesday for a full turn.
Grand Princess is currently operating 10-day Alaska round-trips calling at Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan and Victoria, BC. Capt. Fabrizio Maresca is in command.
The Port of San Francisco expects to host 81 cruise ship calls and 300,000 passengers this year.
Fall highlights include maiden calls by Explorer of the Seas, Sept. 19-20, and Nieuw Amsterdam, Oct. 7.
