Scanship bags first HELCOM-standard cruise ship retrofit

Scanship bags first HELCOM-standard cruise ship retrofit
Scanship has bagged an advanced wastewater purification system retrofit that it said will be the first in the cruise industry to comply with the new MARPOL standard MEPC 227(64) chapter 4.2 including phosphorus and nitrogen removal, also known as the HELCOM standard.

The order is for an unnamed 'larger Miami-based cruise line company.'

The retrofit will take place during a scheduled drydock in the second quarter of 2016.

The Scanship AWP system, currently the only HELCOM-compliant system, is operating aboard Quantum of the Seas, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Viking Star. In the coming years, 18 large cruise vessels are scheduled to begin cruise operations with Scanship HELCOM-compliant systems.

The class approval process with DNV GL to obtain MED B and MED F certificates according to the standard was based on the operation of Scanship AWP systems aboard Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line ships.
