Greater community access to the riverfront features as part of the $78m project to modernize Montréal's cruise terminal at Alexandra Pier. One component is a Port Centre on the terminal's second floor where the exhibit 'History of Ships' is opening to the public on Wednesday.

The free exhibit, also available and convenient to cruise visitors, features the Port of Montréal's rich history and its pivotal role in the socioeconomic development of Montréal, Québec and Canada. It also marks the first interpretation centre of port activities in Québec.

Ship models from different time periods illustrating the various types of cargo and passenger transport will be on display. Also featured are textual and visual information about the port's development from the early 20th century to the present day.

'We are delighted to help Montréalers, and visitors, discover the Port of Montréal's rich history through this exhibition for free. "History of Ships" aims to raise interest in our city's maritime heritage and to showcase the benefits and value brought by the Port of Montréal,' said Sylvie Vachon, president and ceo, Montréal Port Authority.

She added that 2017 is a great opportunity to remember the bonds uniting the destinies of the port, the city and Canada. This year is the 375th anniversary of Montréal and the 150th anniversary of Canada's confederation.
