Silversea has developed a program that bolsters its reputation as a top purveyor of wines at sea.

A selection of 160 wines

Selected by the cruise line's expert wine ambassador, Lawrence d’Almeida, approximately 160 wines are featured in the selection, which includes roughly 50 labels of complimentary wines.

Every major wine region is represented in the complimentary range, as well as every major wine grape, yet Italian wines are particularly well-represented as an homage to Silversea's heritage. Local wines are added to reflect the ships' destinations.

'From a rare Italian wine that is virtually unheard of to the very finest bottles that no luxury establishment can be without, our range of wines—both complimentary and premium—is tailored to provide our guests with an insight into the world’s best wines,' said Birgit Vadlau, Silversea’s food and beverage director.

Lectures, tasings and tours

Designed for wine-related destinations and hosted by d’Almeida or master sommeliers, wine voyages feature shipboard lectures and tastings as well as shore excursions.

The next wine voyage is Silver Whisper's Oct. 18-31 cruise from Lisbon to Fort Lauderdale. The line has partnered with Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia and the American Fine Wine Competition to introduce both old world and new world wines.

Passengers will be able to sample approximately 33 varieties of high-class Italian wines, provided by Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia, a group that unites the top Italian wineries to protect and promote the prestige of the country’s most illustrious wines. Nineteen varieties of America’s best wines will be available thanks to Silversea’s partnership with the American Fine Wine Competition (AFWC).

Vintners, journalists, wine magazine publishers and co-founders of the prestigious AWFC, Monty and Sara Preiser of Napa and Florida, will join the voyage as instructors/hosts. The Preisers will present AFWC’s double gold medal-winning wines and/or bottles from wineries named ‘Winery of the Year.’

Accredited sommelier course

Members of the ASPI sommelier association Giuseppe Vaccarini and Gennaro Buono, former best sommelier in the world and the best sommelier in Italy respectively, will each join a segment of the trans-Atlantic voyage. Vaccarini will accompany various wine-related excursions, while Buono will host an accredited sommelier course so participants can disembark with a recognized sommelier qualification.

A further four wine voyages are scheduled for 2019. Auckland to Sydney on Silver Muse, Jan. 20-Feb. 2, is hosted by d’Almeida and features a half-day tour of Gisborne’s wine region, trips to Picton wineries, a tour of the Marlborough region and a trip to Ghost Rock Vineyard.

Silver Whisper's Sydney to Bali cruise, Feb. 2-16, also hosted by d'Almeida, will stock Australian wines in the complimentary selection and feature a private tour of Queensland's Sirromet Winery.

Silver Cloud's Lisbon to Amsterdam cruise, May 1-13, will visit some of Europe's key wine regions, accessed from Oporto, La Coruña, Gijon, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Belle Ile, Douarnenez, Saint Malo and Le Havre.

And Silver Whisper's London (Greenwich) to Barcelona voyage, May 19-June 2, will call at Honfleur, Saint Malo, Bordeaux, Le Verdon (Bordeaux), Bilbao, Lisbon, Cadiz and Málaga. Passengers can participate in the accredited sommelier course on board and take private tours of wineries throughout the voyage.
