Dominic Froio, vp security services, Carnival Cruise Line, and American Guard's Sherine Assal cut the ribbon for the HI-SCAN 6040-2is dual-view x-ray inspection system at PortMiami
Smiths Detection Inc., along with maritime security provider American Guard Services, debuted the first dual-view x-ray systems to be used for screening cruise passengers' belongings.

The system was unveiled Monday morning during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at PortMiami.

Raising the bar for next-generation cruise industry security screening methods, HI-SCAN 6040-2is dual-view x-ray inspection systems will be used to screen the belongings of passengers embarking for Carnival Cruise Line trips departing from Terminals D and E.

This advanced dual-view x-ray captures both horizontal and vertical angle images, giving operators two different, high-resolution images to enhance the screening process and reducing the need to re-scan items. The system is expected to improve the embarkation experience by helping expedite screening at security checkpoints.

It also features automatic explosives detection capability.

'American Guard Services and Carnival Cruise Line proactively worked with SDI to integrate best-in-class technology into their screening protocol. Through this collaboration we are confident that they have deployed the needed solutions to help them enhance the safety and security of passengers, crews, ships and ports,' SDI president Dan Gelston said.

Sherine Assal, president of American Guard Services, said the company is 'committed to responding to the needs of our customers and cruise guests. We are excited to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Carnival Cruise Line to further enhance security standards within the cruise industry.'

Assal added that American Guard Services looks forward to furthering its commitment with all the company's cruise line partners.

American Guard Services offers a range of maritime security services in accordance with the Maritime Transportation and Security Act and International Ship and Port Facility Security Code.

SDI’s broad range of x-ray inspection systems are a top choice in security screening applications around the world, including airports, ports and borders, government buildings, hotels and other infrastructures where security checkpoints are required.

The HI-SCAN 6040-2is uses multiple views and sophisticated algorithms to indicate concealed items and possible threats. It is qualified on the US Transportation Security Administration's Air Cargo Screening Technology List and approved in the EU for use in airports across the US and Europe.
