South Florida ports prepare for possible gale-force winds

South Florida ports prepare for possible gale-force winds
Coast Guard Sector Miami set port condition 'whiskey' for PortMiami, Port Everglades, Port of Palm Beach and all other South Florida terminals and facilities at 4 p.m. Thursday. This is due to the expectation that sustained gale-force winds generated by a tropical wave may arrive within 72 hours.

The ports are open to commercial traffic. If and when port readiness condition 'yankee' is set, meaning sustained gale force winds are expected within 24 hours, vessel movement will be restricted.

Friday morning forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said the disturbance, which is dumping heavy rains over portions of the Bahamas, Hispaniola and eastern Cuba, has a decreased likelihood—20%—of becoming a tropical storm in the next two days.

The Florida mainland is now less likely to be impacted. However, forecasters advised the eastern Gulf of Mexico region to monitor the disturbance for possible storm development in the coming days.
